Jumbo-Visma's Jonas Vingegaard has extended his lead on Richard Carapaz after the last mountain stage of the Tour de France.

The Dane -who is the new leader of the Dutch formation- managed to stay in the Yellow Jersey group throughout the stage and on the last climb of the day of the Luz Ardiden, he had the help of Wout van Aert. After he was left by himself, he could fend off every attack and crossed the finish line once again in the second position, extending his lead on the Ecuadorian of Ineos-Grenadiers to six seconds.

"I didn’t have my best day today," said Vingegaard. "It was very hard and a mental battle. So you can imagine that I am very happy with my performance. The fact that I am second in the Tour de France after the last mountain stage is great. I started the Tour in service of Primoz, but I had not dared to dream this. I also have to thank the team. Sepp [Kuss], Wout and Mike [Teunissen] were amazing.

"It is looking good now for the podium in Paris. But we have seen before in this Tour that it can also go differently. So tomorrow we have to survive another stage and then go full steam ahead in the time trial."
