Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) has taken the victory of the 18th stage of the Tour de France, the last in the mountains in this edition of the race.

The last Pyrenean stage was 129.7 kilometres long and took the riders between Pau and the iconic hors category climb of Luz Ardiden, over a route that also featured the Col du Tourmalet. The pack was very active during the first kilometres of the day and Matej Mohoric, Chris Juul-Jensen and Sean Bennett were the first ones to get away while they were chased by riders like Julian Alaphilippe, Nairo Quintana and Wout Poels.

With around 60 kilometres to go, Alaphilippe and Mohoric were left alone in front, and in the pack riders like Miguel Angel Lopez, Ruben Guerreiro, David Gaudu, Quintana, Omar Fraile and Ion Izagirre made a move, and some kilometres later they joined the head of the race, during the ascent of the Tourmalet.

On the descent, Gaudu launched an attack and managed to create a gap with the rest, but during the last climb of the day with nine kilometres to go, he was reeled back in by the Yellow Jersey group. Ineos-Grenadiers set the pace of the reduced group for the next kilometres, leaving behind riders like Poels and Rigobeto Uran.

With around three kilometres to go, Tadej Pogacar made a move and was followed by Jonas Vingegaard, Richard Carapaz, Sepp Kuss and Enric Mas. The American of Jumbo Visma then took the lead to set a high pace in order to try to get rid of the competitors of Vingegaard.

Shortly after Kuss finished his turn, Mas launched an attack but soon was caught by Pogacar while Carapaz and Vingegaard remained together and also left the Spaniard behind. Pogacar took, like this, his third stage victory in this edition of the race.

Vingegaard and Carapaz crossed the finish line in the second and third position respectively.
