Remco Evenepoel (Deceuninck-Quick-Step) has taken the overall lead after the first stage of the Baloise Belgium Tour.

The Belgian rider, who had to withdraw from the Giro d'Italia, returned to racing in the competition of his country and two years after he won it. Deceuninck-Quick-Step with riders like Mark Cavendish and Yves Lampaert set a high pace in the pack during the first stage and when the time was right, the young rider launched his attack and made a selection.

Evenepoel continued pulling from this group until they caught the remaining escapees and then took nine bonus seconds on the Golden Kilometre, showing his strength as they faced the last climb of the day. The stage came down to a three-man sprint and the rider finished in the second position, just behind his fellow countryman Robbe Ghys (Sport Vlaanderen-Baloise) and his bonus seconds allowed him to take the leader's jersey at the end of the stage.

"Today was a very hot and hard stage, with some technical and nervous local laps where the race came to life and where you didn’t have any proper moment of respite," said the Belgian. "The team did a great job and I am grateful to them, as we were in the right place at the right moment.

"When we saw there were some splits and that the others were suffering, we decided to do something, so I attacked and it worked out well. The goal was to gain as much time as possible on the chasers and we can be content with the way it panned out, as it’s a perfect start for us."
