Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin Fenix) has taken the victory of the second stage in the Tour de Suisse while Stefan Küng maintained the GC lead.

The second day of competition in the Swiss race took the riders between Neuhausen am Rheinfall and Lachen over a route that featured three climbs of the second category. Alpecin Fenix took the lead on the third climb of the day to favour their leader Van der Poel.

The Dutch national champion responded to a move of World Champion Julian Alaphilippe and then he launched his own attack. On the last stretch of the race, Maximilian Schachmann (Bora-hansgrohe) joined Van der Poel at the front, but the Dutchman made a new move and managed to cross the finish line by himself.

Although Stefan Küng had heard after the finish line that he had lost the Yellow Jersey, at the end the information was corrected and it was announced that the Swiss had retained the lead of the GC for another day and only for one second over Alaphilippe.
