Criterium du Dauphine

Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) has taken the win of the sixth stage at the Criterium du Dauphine, while Alexey Lutsenko seized the lead of the General Classification.

The sixth day of competition in the French race took the riders through a 167.2-kilometre route that featured two climbs of the second category and two of the third, including the climbing finish. The breakaway of the day included names lile Lawson Craddock, Anthony Perez, Greg Van Avermaet, Omer Goldstein, Louis Meintjes and Sven-Erik Bystrom, among others.

The pack was led by Bora-hansgrohe with the hope of keeping the Yellow Jersey of Lukas Pöstlberger for another day, so the gap with the front men didn't reach more than three minutes. On the penultimate climb of the day, Jumbo-Visma's Tony Martin increased the pace and soon after Astana-Premier Tech also took over, which managed to drop Pöstlberger.

Movistar then did their part and with 10 kilometres to go, the gap went down to 30 seconds. On the scape, Craddock was left behind by Meintjes on the last climb but was soon caught by the reduced group, which was led by Ineos-Granadiers. Among many attacks, Miguel Angel Lopez also tried a move but was overtaken by Ineos' Geraint Thomas, who was taking Tao Geoghegan Hart with him. But soon after, Valverde launched his attack and overtook the winner of the 2020 Giro d'Italia just before the finish line.

Lutsenko crossed the finish line with the same group, which gave him the lead of the General Classification. His teammate Ion Izagirre climbed to the second overall position at eight seconds and Wilco Kelderman (Bora-hansgrohe) closes the top-three, sitting 12 seconds behind the Kazakh rider.
