Ineos Grenadiers' Egan Bernal has taken the overall victory of the Giro d'Italia, the first of his career.

The Colombian rider had already won the Tour de France in 2019 and now adds a second Grand Tour victory to his palmares. The rider won the ninth stage of the Corsa Rosa and since that day wore the Pink Jersey until the closing time trial in the city of Milano.

"Winning the Giro puts me in a wonderful situation," said Bernal. "I’m quiet but inside, I feel an explosion of happiness. Nowadays I’m riding at an excellent level that enabled me to win the Giro but I have to keep my feet on the ground. There are other riders who are also very strong. Thanks to them I’ll find some fresh motivation for the future. The most difficult moment of the Giro was yesterday when Caruso rode away. I had five teammates around me but suddenly they were down to just three. Luckily Jonathan Castroviejo made the right decisions at the right time.

"The most beautiful moment of the race came from riding strongly on the gravelled roads to Montalcino. Today, listening to the voice of my coach [Mikel Artetxe] during the time trial was another beautiful moment. I’ll remember it in the years to come. My team manager Dave Brailsford also has played a big part in this victory. I went through difficult times after I won the Tour de France. With this Giro, I have again found what I was aiming for."
