Jumbo-Visma's Wout van Aert has taken the win at the Amstel Gold Race beating Tom Pidcock by millimetres.

The Dutch formation did an outstanding job on the race and riders like Jonas Vingegaard, Sam Oomen and Primoz Roglic were in front of the pack during the second part of the race. On the last climb of the Cauberg, the Belgian attacked with a group that included World Champion Julian Alaphilippe.

In the last kilometres, Pidcock, Van Aert and Max Schachmann were the three riders that remained in front and that were going to fight for the win. The race came down to a final sprint in which the Belgian beat Pidcock by millimetres, in a decision that had to be studied by the race jury.

"I didn't dare believe it. I sprinted the last few meters with my eyes closed," said Van Aert. "The jury only told me just before the podium ceremony that I had won. It was very difficult to say, that was clear from the time the jury needed to make it final. I have never experienced this before.

"I could always count on Jonas, Sam and Primoz just before the final. They jumped well with almost all the attacks. It was a shame that Primoz had a mechanical problem in the final. The team really rode for the win today. I am very proud of this victory and my performances in the classics. I have competed for this victory in almost every race and have always been in top shape. I am very happy to go into the holidays with this victory. The bike will be put aside for a while now."

This was the last race of the Spring classics season for the rider. He took the victory in Gent-Wevelgem and the Amstel Gold Race, he won two stages and got a second GC placement in Tirreno-Adriatico, finished second in the Brabantse Pijl and third in Milano-Sanremo.
