Itzulia Basque Country

Deceuninck-Quick-Step's Mikkel Honoré has taken the victory of the fifth stage of Itzulia Basque Country, Brandon McNulty kept the lead of the General Classification.

The fifth stage of the Spanish race took the riders from Hondarribia and Ondarroa over a 160.2 kilometres long that featured three climbs of the third category, which had the potential of being a good day for the escape group. The day started at a high pace and the escape group was formed during the first part and included Josef Cerny, Mikkel Honoré (Deceuninck-Quick-Step), Ide Schelling (Bora-hansgrohe), Julien Bernard (Trek-Segafredo) and Andrey Amador (Ineos-Grenadiers).

On the last part of the race, Omar Fraile and Alex Aranburu (Astana-Premier Tech) tried to escape from the group and although they managed to create a good gap with them, their adventure was finished kilometres later by the pace of the peloton. Cerny, Honore and Bernard were the only riders in front to survive from the breakaway.

The two riders of Deceuninck-Quick-Step worked together and left the rider of Trek-Segafredo behind. Honoré was the first one to cross the finish line, followed by his teammate, while Bernard arrived to the finish 17 seconds later. McNulty (UAE Team Emirates) crossed the line with the pack 28 seconds after the winner and maintained the lead of the General Classification.
