Jumbo-Visma's Primoz Roglic has taken the victory of the opening stage at Itzulia - Vuelta al Pais Vasco.

The first stage of the Spanish race was a 13.9-kilometre individual time trial in Bilbao. The course included two main climbs, one on the first 2.5 kilometres and the second one at the end, a 500-metre ascent. Roglic was one of the first riders to set a competitive time in the fight against the clock, stopping it in 17 minutes and 17 seconds.

UAE-Team Emirates' Brandon McNulty was one of the riders to come close to it, finishing the circuit two seconds slower than the Slovenian, but he managed to remain on the hot seat until the end. The last rider to go down the ramp of the time trial was Tadej Pogacar -who faced his fellow countryman Roglic for the last time in the 2020 Tour de France- and although he managed to claim the Mountain Jersey, he was 28 seconds than him.

Roglic finished the day wearing the leader's jersey, while McNulty tops the young rider classification. The second stage of the day will be 154.8 kilometres long between Zalla and Sestao and features two climbs of the third category and one of the second, 14 kilometres before the finish line.
