2021 UEC Road European Championships - Trentino

Sonny Colbrelli (Bahrain Victorious) has become the new European champion after winning the road race in Trento.

The European Championships of Trentino 2021 finished with the Elite Men road race, which took place over a 179.2-kilometre route in Trento, Italy, over a rolling course. The first escape of the day included names like David de la Cruz, Mikel Landa, Gorka Izagirre, Thibaut Pinot, and Sebastian Reichenbach, among others, and they got an advantage of more than a minute over the pack.

But they were neutralised after a group formed by Romain Bardet, Remco Evenepoel, Pavel Sivakov and Gianni Moscon attacked and got to them. In the fourth lap -of eight- Tadej Pogacar attacked from the pack and brought riders like Victor Campenaerts, Mark Padun and Matteo Trentin with him, and later they were joined by Marc Hirschi, Colbrelli, Benoit Cosnefroy, Ben Hermans, and Sivakov and Evenepoel, who were left behind for a moment.

On the penultimate lap, Evenepoel made a move on the Povo climb and was followed only by Colbrelli and Cosnefroy. And during the last climb of the day, the Frenchman left the other two riding by themselves in front.

It all came down to a two-men sprint and Colbrelli confidently took the victory ahead of the young Belgian. Cosnefroy crossed the finish line one minute and 30 seconds behind the front duo and stepped on the third position of the final podium.

This is the fourth Italian victory in a row at the road race of the European Championships. Matteo Trentin, Elia Viviani and Giacomo Nizzolo took the European title in 2018, 2019 and 2020, respectively.
