Jumbo-Visma's Tom Dumoulin has been forced to finish his season after breaking his wrist in an accident during training.

The Dutchman was doing a recon ride of his own Tour de Dumoulin -an event that will take place on October 3- in the Ardennes when he was hit by a car during training. The rider will have to undergo surgery in his right wrist at his home city, Maastricht, the Netherlands.

"This is a big disappointment", said Dumoulin -who just finished in the top ten of the overall standings at the Benelux Tour. "My season is finished. That’s a big deception, because I just got really good at it again. Also, during the training today I felt really strong. I had a lot of confidence that I could ride a very strong month."

The winner of the 2017 Giro d'Italia was also preparing to start at the World Championships of Flanders, Belgium, and continuation of his season that included also Il Lombardia. "I was really looking forward to that," he commented. "Those are races that suit me very well, but unfortunately it won’t be for this year."
