Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) has shown once again his fighting spirit at the second stage of Itzulia Basque Country, which won him some seconds back.

The Slovenian rider was one more time one of the riders who launch attack after attack in a race, this time in the second day of the Spanish race. On the penultimate climb of the day, he made two crucial moves that gave him some distance with the rest of the General Classification riders but he was caught on the descent.

Nevertheless, the winner of the 2020 Tour de France crossed the finish line in the third position, behind the winner of the stage Alex Aranburu and Omar Fraile. The bonus seconds he earned made him climb one position in the General Classification, where he sits 24 seconds behind his fellow countryman Primoz Roglic, while the day before the difference was of 28 seconds.

"Today was a hard day on the bike," said Pogacar. "The conditions were tough so we focussed on keeping ourselves warm and keeping a good position in the bunch. We started the last climb in a good position and myself and [Brandon] McNulty tried to get away. In the end Hirschi put me in the right place for the sprint and we were able to take some bonus seconds on the line."
