Team BikeExchange's Esteban Chaves has taken the victory of the fourth stage in the Volta a Catalunya, crossing the finish line by himself after an attack on the last climb.

The fourth stage of the Spanish race was another day in the mountains over a 166.5-kilometre route between Ripoll and Port Ainé and that featured one climb of the first category and two hors category ascents. A group of 12 riders formed a group in front after the first climb and included names like Thomas De Gendt, Lennard Kämna, Antwan Tolhoek, Juan Pedro López, Rigoberto Urán and Louis Meintjes, among others.

During the second climb of the day, Kämna made a move and left his companions behind while his change of pace left struggling riders like De Gendt. Meanwhile, Ineos-Grenadiers and Movistar took the charge of setting the pace in the pack to keep the escapees at bay.

With 20 kilometres to go, and as the last ascent started, the rest of the breakway was caught by pack while the German rider of Bora-hansgrohe continue in his solo effort. At around seven kilometres from the finish line, Team BikeExchange's Esteban Chaves jumped from the pack, which caused an increase in the pace that reduced its size.

The Colombian rider crossed the finish line on his own, seven seconds ahead of a group that included Michael Woods, Geraint Thomas, Adam Yates, Sepp Kuss, Alejandro Valverde and Richie Porte, among others.

Yates remained the lead of the General Classification, where he sits ahead of two of his teammates: Porte and Thomas. Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) and Wilco Kelderman (Bora-hansgrohe) complete the top five of the overall classification after the fourth stage.
