Alex Dowsett (Israel Start-Up Nation) has announced the postponement of his attempt to break the hour record because he contracted Covid-19.

The Briton was set to try to break Victor Campenaerts' record on December 12 at the National Cycling Centre velodrome in Manchester, England, but this plan has been interrupted as the rider contracted the virus. The date of the new attempt of the rider -who had already set the record on May 2, 2015 by completing a distance of 52.937 km- has not yet been decided.

"I am really disappointed the attempt can’t go ahead as planned but my health is first and foremost the priority," said Dowsett. "I’d like to thank everyone, the event organisers, event sponsors, my team, the UCI and above all the public for their support and very much look forward to attacking the record in 2021 with the same intent. We’re looking to announce a 2021 date as soon as possible."

The current hour record is held by Belgian rider Victor Campenaerts (NTT Pro Cycling) after he set a mark of 55.089 km on April 16, 2019, in the velodrome of Aguascalientes, Mexico.
