Jumbo-Visma's Primoz Roglic has confirmed his virtual win of the Vuelta a España on the last mountain stage of the competition.

The 17th stage of the race featured a mountain finish on the hors-category climb of La Covatilla and it had a thrilling finale in the General Classification fight. With around two kilometres to go, Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers) launched an attack and created a gap with the Slovenian national champion, but his own steady pace along with the help of his teammate Lennard Hofstede and the unexpected aid of Enric Mas and Marc Soler (Movistar), allowed him to cross the finish line before the expiration of the 45-second margin he had with the Ecuadorian.

"It became very exciting in the last kilometres", Roglic explained. "I knew it would be enough to retain the overall lead if I kept my own pace. In the end it all falls into place and I’m still wearing the red jersey. Carapaz showed that he is very strong. I didn’t always have everything under control, but I never had the feeling that I would lose the red jersey. I stayed focused and did my own thing.

"That turned out to be enough to keep my place in the rankings. The whole team showed themselves today. My teammates did a really good job today, as they have done throughout the Vuelta. Until now, we have been focused every day. We have to stay focused for one more day and then it’s over."

Now 24 seconds separate Roglic from Carapaz but the last stage of the Vuelta is a flat stage that finishes in the city circuit of Madrid, suitable for the sprinters, so if the day unfolds as expected, the Slovenian will step on the highest spot of the podium at the end of the day and claim his second overall victory in the race.
