UAE Team Emirates' Jasper Philipsen has taken his first victory in a grand tour in the 15th stage of the Vuelta a España, while Primoz Roglic has kept the lead of the overall classification.

The stage was the longest of the entire 2020 edition of the Spanish grand tour with a route of 230.8 kilometres that featured five climbs of the third category and to that difficult profile, wind and rain were added to make it all more challenging. A group of ten riders escaped from the pack after 56 kilometres of racing and it included names like Mattia Cattaneo, Rui Costa, Luis Leon Sanchez, Tim Wellens and Jose Joaquin Rojas.

The escapees got a gap of more than five minutes with the pack and it got reduced as the climbs passed and during the last one, and as it was reduced to one minute, Cattanep made a move and went on by himself but was eventually reeled back in with four kilometres to go. The times of the General Classification riders were taken at the three-kilometre mark as it was oil on the ground and the organisation wanted to avoid dangerous situations.

Sprinters and their teams continued and Philipsen proved to be the strongest on the slight uphill finish, taking like this his first victory in a three-week race. Pascal Ackermann (Bora-hansgrohe) and Jannik Steimle (Deceuninck-Quick-Step) completed the top three of the day.
