Jhonatan Narvaez (Ineos-Grenadiers) has survived from the escape of the 12th stage of the Giro d'Italia and took a solo victory in Cesenatico.

The Ecuadorian was part of the escape of the day and during the last stretch was left alone in front with Bahrain-Merida's Mark Padun. But the rider didn't give up on his intentions to fight for the day's victory and launched a new movement at around 21 kilometres from the finish line, after which he kept going until he crossed the finish line by himself, becoming the third Ecuadorian to win a stage in the Italian grand tour.

"I’m really happy," said Narvaez. "In the last days I tried to get into the breakaway but it was too difficult and the peloton was too strong. Today it was again the same but I was able to get up the road and I’m so happy to win from the break.

"After what happened with Geraint (Thomas) it was difficult for everyone. But the spirit is there every day and I know I have been happy with my spirit. We’ve been fighting every day and finally today I did it."
