Israel Start-Up Nation's Alex Dowsett has won the eight stage of the Giro d'Italia after doing an almost 20-kilometre solo ride.

The day started with the news of the withdrawal of Simon Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) after he tested positive for Covid-19, a test that was done to him following some mild symptoms.

The rolling profile of the eight stage of the Italian grand tour had two possibilities of an outcome: a bunch sprint or an opportunity for the escapees and the latter was the correct one. The breakaway of the day was formed by six riders including Joey Rosskopf (CCC Team), Alex Dowsett (Israel Start-Up Nation), Salvatore Puccio (Ineos Grenadiers) and Matthew Holmes (Lotto Soudal).

The breakaway built a gap of more than nine minutes with a peloton that was controlling each other and not making many movements. The group in front did several attacks until Puccio managed to create a gap while the others went on to chase him until they caught him with 18.5 kilometres to go, after which Dowsett made a move that was going to be decisive for the stage.

The former hour-record holder kept pressing in front until he created a gap big enough for him to hake his second stage victory in the Giro d'Italia. Puccio and Holmes were in the second and third positions of the day respectively, while Joao Almeida (Deceunink-Quick-Step) crossed the finish line with the pack and retained the lead of the General Classification.
