Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers) has taken the victory of the fifth stage in the Giro d'Italia, making it two in this edition of the race, his debut in a grand tour.

The peloton faced a 225-kilometre route during the fifth day of competition and it included two climbs of the third category and a final ascent on the first category climb of Camigliatello Sila, before facing a downhill finish. The escape of the day included riders like Jan Tratnik, Filippo Ganna, Hector Carretero and Carl Frederik Hagen.

There were several attacks in front by riders like Carretero, who was followed by Ganna. Meanwhile, Thomas De Gendt and Einer Rubio attacked from the pack and went on to chase the time trial World Champion, who managed to leave Carretero behind, but were eventually reeled back by the pack.

In the peloton, teams like Trek-Segafredo and Sunweb took the lead of the pace of the pack to protect their GC leaders Vincenzo Nibali and Wilco Kelderman. Ganna crossed the finish line by himself, taking a second victory in the race after winning also the opening time trial of the current edition of the race.

Bora-hansgrohe's Patrick Konrad and Joao Almeida (Deceuninck-Quick-Step) were the fastest in the sprint of the peloton, which allows the Portuguese rider to remain on top of the General Classification for another day.
