Deceuninck-Quick-Step's Joao Almeida has retained for one more day the Maglia Rosa at the Giro d'Italia after the finish on the fourth stage.

The Portuguese -who is the ninth rider of Deceuninck-Quick-Step to wear the Maglia Rosa and the third of his country to lead the General Classification in a grand tour- managed to stay with the peloton despite the heavy climb in the middle of the route and the fast ending, and after taking some seconds in the intermediate sprints, he extended his stay on top of the General Classification.

"It was a nice day out there, but it was made a bit complicated by the big tempo some of the teams drove on the climb," said Almeida. "I remained attentive and fortunately I had a great team around me, which kept me out of the wind and was of big help on the tricky descent.

"Knowing I was tied on the GC with [Jonathan, Ed.] Caicedo, I went for the intermediate sprints and those two seconds I bagged in made me calmer before the final. I am happy to have retained my jersey, it was really special to have it on my shoulders today, and we will continue to take it one stage at a time and see what happens."
