Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) has taken his first victory in a Monument over the weekend in Milano-Sanremo.

The Belgian has been having a successful restart of the season, last week he took the win at Strade Bianche and now he showed to be the strongest rider at the first Monument of the season: Milano-Sanremo.

This victory came just days after the team has been suffering the consequences of Dylan Groenewegen's crash at the Tour de Pologne, which affected seriously Deceuninck-Quick-Step's Fabio Jakobsen. "Unfortunately it was a week with intense and mixed emotions," said Van Aert. "I am happy to be able to deliver this beauty to the team.

"I am super happy. I can’t believe I won Milan-Sanremo and Strade Bianche. I have no words for it. To restart the season like this is crazy and really nice."

Van Aert remained with the pack for the entire course and followed Julian Alaphilippe's move at the end of the Poggio, being the fastest rider to cross the finish line in a close final sprint. "I had a good feeling from the start," he explained. "It is of course a very long course. In the beginning I focused on eating, drinking and staying cool.

"We were on a mission with the whole team. Antwan worked hard in the peloton. Bert-Jan Lindeman and Paul Martens kept me well in front. Then Timo Roosen stayed with me towards the Cipressa and Amund Jansen did a fantastic job on the Poggio. They were beyond themselves. That was very nice to see."
