On his first race of the 2020 season, Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) showed once again his good form by taking the title of the road race at the Slovenian National Championships.

The result of the first major UCI race since the coronavirus pandemic stopped the season in March, came down to its final kilometres, which featured a steep climb that reached ramps of 7.8%. After the breakaway of the day was caught, Roglic launched an attack and was followed by UAE Team Emirates' Tadej Pogacar.

The duo arrived together to the last kilometre and then the rider of Jumbo-Visma launched a final attack that his fellow countryman couldn't match. Pogacar crossed the finish line in the second position and Bahrain McLaren's Matej Mohoric, in the third place.

"It is really wonderful that the situation allows us to finally race again and to do what we do best, racing our bikes," said Roglic at the end of the race. "I am therefore very happy that I was able to take the national title in my first race of the season.

"It was a tough race with a very tough final climb. Given the results in the spring, Tadej was the favourite and it was certainly not easy to beat him. I had reckoned the climb well in the past few days, so I knew where I had to attack. The fact that I take the victory here in my first race of the season feels very good. I am definitely not in top form yet, but I am already looking forward to the upcoming races. I also want to thank the team for making the effort to support me in Slovenia. That means a lot to me."

Roglic will also start in the time trial of the Slovenian championships next week.
