Sunweb's Tiesj Benoot has won the sixth stage of Paris-Nice. The Belgian finished solo to secure the victory in Apt.

The sixth stage of the French stage rage was 161.5 kilometers long and included four climbs of the second category and two of the third.

World champion Mads Pedersen formed part of an escape group, which further consisted of riders like Winner Anacona, Stefan Küng, Nicolas Edet, Anthony Perez and Alexis Gougeard, later also joined by Romain Bardet.

As Bardet and Edet attacked from the lead group, Soren Kragh Andersen did so from the peloton and eventually joined the two remaining leaders.

The Danish rider went on to drop both Frenchmen, while behind him Vincenzo Nibali and Benoot launched an attack. The latter managed to join his teammate and shortly after left the Scandinavian to take a solo victory. Michael Matthews, also of Sunweb, took second place at 22 seconds and Colombian Sergio Higuita finished third.

Race leader Max Schachmann remains at the top of the GC despite misjudging a curve and finishing at 40 seconds from the stage winner.

Saturday's stage will now be the final stage of this year's edition as the eighth stage to Nice was cancelled due to Covid-19.
