The organisation of the Volta a Catalunya has announced that the 100th edition of the race will be postponed due to the coronavirus crisis.

The Spanish race was set to be held between the 23rd and the 29th of March but the measures taken by the local government make it impossible to continue with the plans. The organisation of the race has decided to postponed it and will talk to the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) to agree a new date in 2020 or even 2021.

"We have tried until the end to hold this especial edition of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya as it was planned, but the current prevention measures and the health of the cyclists, teams and public will prevail over the competition," said the race president Ruben Peris.

"The Volta will return stronger to celebrate its 100th edition in the best conditions. I would want to thank institutions, towns, fans, sponsors, teams, riders, volunteers, for their understanding. The history of the Volta will continue and we will hold the 100th edition on a different date and with the entire participation of the public. Let's not forget that we do this great show for the people to enjoy."
