Niccolo Bonifazio of Total Direct Energie has won the fifth stage of Paris-Nice. The Italian beat Ivan Garcia Cortina and Peter Sagan at the line.

With a length of 227 kilometers and four categorised climbs (one of the second and three of the third), the stage from Gannat to La Côte-Saint-André promised to be a difficult one.

Jan Tratnik, Anthony Turgis, Ryan Mullen and Alexis Gougeard spent most of the day ahead of the peloton and created a maximum lead of seven minutes.

At about 30 kilometers from the finish, GC riders like Julian Alaphilippe tried to bridge to the front group but failed to connect. At the front, only Tratnik was left after dropping Gougeard.

But for the Bahrain-Merida rider, the finish line was just a little bit too far and he saw the sprinters rush past them at the last moment with Bonifazio taking the stage victory.

For the general classification, the day's result causes little change with Bora-hansgrohe's Max Schachmann still in the lead, around a minute ahead of Soren Kragh Andersen and Felix Grossschartner.
