UAE Team Emirates' Tadej Pogacar has taken the victory of the second stage at the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana. The Slovenian rider also climbed to the top of the General Classification of the race.

The stage of the day was 181 kilometres long and took the riders from Torrent to Cullera in the first challenging uphill finale of the competition. The escape group was formed in the first kilometres and included names like Jos van Emden (Jumbo-Visma), Alessandro De Marchi (CCC) and Remy Cavagna (Deceuinck-Quick-Step).

The breakaway created a gap of more than five minutes with the pack but it got closer and closer until most of them were caught with ten kilometres to go, except Cavagna who tried his luck moments before. At around five kilometres to go, Jumbo-Visma's Tobias Voss suffered a hard crash and had to be assisted by the race doctor.

One kilometre later, Cavagna was finally reeled back in by the peloton and just at the start of the last climb, Caja Rural's Gonzalo Serrano launched a strong attack and manage to leave the others behind but at the last kilometre, he was neutralised by a reduced pack.

Movistar's Alejandro Valverde seemed to be the strongest rider at the last metres but UAE Team Emirates' Tadej Pogacar managed to overtake him at the last moment, taking the stage win and the lead of the General Classification. Valverde and Bahrain McLaren's Dylan Teuns completed the top three of the day.
