UAE Team Emirates' Rui Costa has taken the victory in the first stage ever of the Saudi Tour and tops the overall classification of the race.

The first stage of the Saudi race was 173 kilometres long with a finish in Jaww, at the south-west of Riyadh. The breakaway of the day was formed by six riders and had an advantage of more than four minutes with the pack.

Just after the feeding zone and taking advantage of the wind, Bahrain McLaren took control of the speed in front and managed to break the pack. In front, there were 17 riders including Mark Cavendish, Costa and Enrico Gasparotto, among others.

This group caught the front men, and they rode together until the last 500 metres, when the peloton finally got to them but Costa had already taken off in the final climb and took the victory of the day.

"We knew it was going to be a hard stage and that there was going to be a lot of wind, but we did our best to be alert to the conditions," Costa explained. "I knew who I had to watch coming into the finish and that 300 m was the right time to make my move before the hairpin. It's a really important win for me and a great start to the season."
