Dutch road national champion Lorena Wiebes is considering to skip part of the upcoming season after her current team Parkhotel Valkenburg has refused to let her go to a bigger team.

The 20-year-old had a successful 2019 in which she took victories at the Tour of Chongming Island, the EPZ Omloop van Borsele, the Spar Flanders Diamond Tour, the Danilith Nokere Koerse, the road race of the Netherlands national championships and the European Games. The Dutchwoman also finished the year at the top of the UCI individual ranking.

But she's not happy at the team anymore, despite having a contract until 2021, but they have refused to break it to let her go to look for a bigger squad. "I would like to take one step higher and there have also been discussions with Parkhotel," said Wiebes to Dutch broadcaster NOS.

"That has lasted so long that the relationship with the team's management has been broken in such a way that I no longer want to ride for the team. I want to have clarity before the first of January."

The rider has the next four days to have her future free of doubt or she will take drastic measures. "So there are two options for me: either not cycling for half a year or manage to transfer to another team," she explained.

"So there is a good chance that I will no longer ride because I no longer want to do it with Parkhotel. It has now taken so long that I have moved on. It is a shame that it went this way. Maybe I'll do kickboxing then. I like that too."

Parkhotel Valkenburg has reacted to the words of Wiebes. "After a very successful year and a contract extension with Wiebes, we have made investments towards the new season," manager Esra Tromp said to the NOS. "The fact that this has been changing at the last minute is something that we need to think about carefully and not give up.

"It is important that the whole team can build on contracts that have been agreed."
