Jumbo-Visma's Wout van Aert is almost ready to return to competition and he will do that in cyclocross before the end of the year.

The Belgian rider suffered serious injuries at a crash during the time trial of the 13th stage of the Tour de France. Van Aert got tangled in the fences of the course and suffered a serious injury in his thigh that required several surgeries and has left him out of competition until now.

The former World Champion of cyclocross will return to competition in that discipline on December 27 in Loenhout. "Loenhout is close to home and I look forward to it every year," said Van Aert in a press conference in Kortrijk, Belgium. "I am very happy that I don' have to miss Loenhout this year. I don't expect to perform in the field this year, which makes sense because many things have happened.

"I will be very happy when I get the green light to get to the start and, of course, I will give my very best, but I also have to be realistic. The other guys have already several competitions in their legs and to step in so late is not going to be easy, particularly after the injury. I hope to be a cyclist again step by step."
