Bora-hansgrohe has announced the departure of Sam Bennett at the end of the 2019 season.

It has been many months of rumours and talks about the situation of the Irish national champion and the German team. Deceuninck-Quick-Step's CEO Patrick Lefevere commented days ago that Bennett wants to sign with the Belgian team from the 2020 season but that they were having trouble with Bora-hansgrohe to allow him to do it.

"After a great story of success in the past years, Bora-hansgrohe and Sam Bennett have decided to go separate ways," said the team through a statement. "Over the last six years, Bora-hansgrohe developed Sam Bennett into one of the best sprinters in the peloton. Against this background, it, however, became more and more difficult to align the team's and rider's goals.

"Therefore, Bora-hansgrohe's management has decided to accept Sam Bennett's wish to leave Bora-hansgrohe and continue his journey with another team. Bora-hansgrohe wishes Sam Bennett all the best for his future and hopes that he can live up to his sporting dreams."

The Irish national champion signed with the team in 2014 and took a step up to the WorldTour with them in 2017. In his time in the formation, he won stages in races like the Giro d'Italia, the Vuelta a España, the BinckBank Tour and Paris-Nice, among others.
