The Vuelta a España will keep its identity in its 2020 edition and teams and riders can expect a difficult climbing course.

The director of the Spanish grand tour Javier Guillén explained at the Rouleur Classic in Britain that the course of the race will remain true to itself. "We can expect a pure Vuelta," he commented to the media.

"From the beginning, there will be very intense racing, it will have shorter rather than longer stages, but from the first week, there will be difficulties in the route. We want to have mountain stages on the weekends and then a very big mountain stage the day before Madrid."

The 2020 Vuelta a España will start in Utrecht, the Netherlands, on August 14. This will be the fourth time the race starts outside Spain and it will be the second grand depart in the Netherlands -the first time was in 2009. The race will finish on September 6 in the city circuit of Madrid.
