Japanese rider Yukiya Arashiro has taken the victory of the Tour de France Saitama Criterium.

The Japanese race had for the first time the winner of the Tour de France's Yellow Jersey, Egan Bernal, and the wearer of the Red Jersey of the Vuelta a España, Primoz Roglic, riding against each other in their distinctive maillots. The race started with a breakaway of nine riders that included the Polka Dot jersey winner Romain Bardet and Matteo Trentin.

This group was caught at 14 kilometres from the finish and right away a new group counter-attacked -which included strong riders like Jakob Fuglsang, Oliver Naesen, Lilian Calmejane and Yukiya Arashiro. Shortly after, Bernal and Roglic bridged to the front group, but soon after Arashiro attacked and took Fuglsang with him.

The Japanese rider was motivated to show himself in front of his home crowd and accelerated in the last kilometre leaving the Dane behind while Roglic and Bernal changed the pace and finished in the second and third position, respectively.

Earlier in the day, four-time Tour de France winner Chris Froome returned to competition at the team time trial of the Saitama Criterium. He went through the route with Bernal and Jonathan Castroviejo and Ineos finished in the 12th position while the first WorldTour team was AG2R La Mondiale, which finished in the fifth position and behind four Japanese teams.
