Jumbo-Visma's Dylan Groenewegen has taken the victory of the first stage in the OVO Energy Tour of Britain, the third of his career in the race.

The first day of the British race took the riders through a 201.5-kilometre long route from Glasgow to Kirkcudbright in Scotland. The stage was bound to finish in a bunch sprint and the Dutchman showed to have the better legs in the pack, crossing the finish line ahead of Davide Cimolai (Israel Cycling Academy) and Matteo Trentin (Mitchelton-Scott).

"It was perfect," said Groenewegen after the finish line. "We had no help today so we did it all as a team, we rode very strongly to catch the breakaway make it a sprint. I could take my own line; it was a very good lead-out. I was on the wheel of Trentin and sprinted full gas.

"I’ll look at the roadbook this evening and hope to win another stage. I think tomorrow’s a new chance and I will try again."

The rider took also the lead of the General Classification and will wear the leader's jersey in the second stage of the Tour of Britain, which will be contested in Scotland as well.
