Bora-hansgrohe's Sam Bennett has taken his first win wearing the jersey of the national champion of Ireland at the BinckBank Tour.

The rider managed to avoid the big crash that was caused by the rain in the last lap and on one of the cobbled sectors and was protected by his team to finish with the peloton. In the last metres, Bennett followed the sprint launched by Edward Teuns and outsprinted him at the last moment, taking the victory in the opening day of the Dutch-Belgian race.

"I'm really happy to get my first win in the Irish Champion's jersey here," said the rider at the end of the stage. "It was a bit dangerous today with the rain, and I skidded a couple of times, but everything ended up ok. The guys put me in a good position in the finale, and I tried to keep this position over the last two kilometres.

"Then I got behind one of the sprint trains and then I launched my sprint at the right moment. I have a special connection with Belgium and I am particularly happy about this win because it is always difficult to win at this race."
