Bigla has taken the first and the second spots on the eight stage of the Giro Rosa. Elizabeth Banks crossed the finish line in the first position while her teammate Leah Thomas did it in the second place.

The eighth stage was the longest of the 2019 edition of the Italian grand tour with 133 kilometres of distance. The holder of the Maglia Rosa Annemiek van Vleuten attacked in the climb Forcella Pala Barzana, but the peloton caught her on the descent. Then right after, the breakaway of the day formed and included riders like Soraya Paladin (Ale Cipollini), Ruth Winder (Trek-Segafredo), Pauliena Rooijakkers (CCC-Liv), Malgorzata Jasinska (Movistar), Elizabeth Banks and Leah Thomas (Bigla).

The escape managed to stay away from the peloton and with ten kilometres to go, Banks attacked and built a considerable gap with the rest, enough to cross the finish line by herself. Thomas beat Cipollini in the sprint for the second position.

The peloton crossed the finish line three minutes later and Annemiek Van Vleuten kept the leader's jersey for another day. "I can hardly believe it!" said Banks at the finish line. "We had two riders in the escapee group, but the group wasn’t working well, so we knew that we had to attack.

"I went with around 10km remaining, and Thomas, our Team Manager, was encouraging me, and Leah was working so hard in the group to neutralise all the attacks. I really love racing with Bigla, and this victory is thanks to my fantastic teammates and all the staff who have been working so hard at this race."

"I got away from the peloton, and Lizzy also managed to bridge across," added Thomas. "We worked well, but then towards the end, the group wasn’t working so well any more, and we risked getting caught. We knew we had to attack, and Lizzy’s attempt ended up being successful.

"I neutralised several attacks and Lizzy was able to maintain her gap over the chasing group and eventually take the win. I’m also happy that I was able to take second place, and we really couldn’t have had a better result today."
