Mitchelton-Scott's Lucy Kennedy lost the win of the third stage of the Giro Rosa by little. The winner of the stage Marianne Vos crossed the finish line just ahead of the Australian.

Kennedy escaped in the last stretch of the Italian race's third stage and as she was ready to celebrate her victory, the Dutch rider of CCC-Liv overtook her and seized the victory. The Australian expected that the gap was big enough to take the first WorldTour victory of her career but the outcome was different.

"I attacked and didn’t look back," explained Kennedy at the end of the stage. "Yesterday I attacked, got away, but maybe didn’t fully commit to it, maybe didn’t believe I could stay away so it was cool to get another chance today.

"Right at the end, I looked back and thought I had it, my first WorldTour win but as I raised my fist in the air, Vos came past me. I was absolutely spent. Obviously, I am very very disappointed to miss out but it is still my best result. I haven’t had a WorldTour podium before so I can be really happy with that."

The race was very active with several attacks and a steep finale over a cobbled sector. "It was quite a hectic race with winding narrow roads and I struggled with my positioning a little bit but coming up that final drag, we basically followed the plan exactly, with Spratt or myself attacking around three-kilometre to go when it got a little bit steeper," the rider commented.

"Also my attack had another role in stringing out the peloton and making it better for Annemiek with her GC ambitions."
