Lourdes Oyarbide has taken the victory in the road race of the Spanish national championships. The rider of Movistar got this win one day after finishing in the second position of the time trial competition.

The road race was 108 kilometres long between Archena and Lorca, in Murcia, and was held under extremely hot conditions. Oyarbide made a decisive move with 60 kilometres to go to try to bridge to the front group.

She eventually got to the escapees and left them behind one by one until she was left alone with Irene Mendez and Mireia Benito. The rider dropped them both in the last stretch of the course and crossed the finish line by herself, while her two former companions completed the final podium of the competition.

"It has been a surprise because I wasn't in my best condition, but often in Championships, strange races can happen," said the rider after the podium ceremony. "The idea was to send in the breakaway the biggest possible group of girls. With Alba (Teruel) I managed to catch the breakaway and then I launched an attack to be ahead and that Gloria (Rodriguez), Eider (Merino), Alicia (Gonzalez), Lorena (Llamas) or Sheyla (Gutierrez) could get to us.

In the end, the distance was too much and the fight was among us. Thinking in how far the finish line was, I kept the pace until the last two kilometres and then I made a move. It was difficult to create a gap, I suffered a lot, I had cramps, I was stiff, but I could go through el Castillo with a lot of effort and celebrate the victory."

"This is a big joy for me because I don't find myself often in situations like this and this year I have been living them several times. This is for the team, because of the fantastic work that they have done and this was a great show that fortunately people could watch on TV, something that I think is fantastic and gives a lot of value to our work. I'm simply happy."
