Boels-Dolmans' Jolien D'Hoore has taken the victory of the opening stage of Emakumeen Bira. The rider outsprinted Sofia Bertizzolo and Gracie Elvin.

The first stage of the UCI WorldTour race had a start and a finish in Iurreta and took the riders over a 101-kilometre route that included two climbs of the third category. One of the first escapees to get a good advantage over the pack was Trek-Segafredo's Anna Plichta, but despite her gap of more than two minutes, she was reeled back in after the first climb of the day.

Trek-Segafredo's Elisa Longo Borghini and Mitchelton-Scott's Amanda Spratt attacked on the last ascent of the day and built a gap of more than half a minute with the peloton, which was diminished by the climbs. The duo's adventure was over close to the last kilometres of the race and the reduced pack faced the final sprint, in which D'Hoore showed to have the better legs.

The Belgian rider outsprinted Virtu's Sofia Bertizzolo and Mitchelton-Scott's Gracie Elvin to take her first victory of the season and the overall lead of the race. "In the final, the climbers attacked on the hilly terrain," said D'Hoore.

"The team annihilated each attack. Great to see how hard they worked for me today. Besides all this hard work they were also able to give me a perfect lead-out in the final. I am really happy that I could finish the job today and win the stage."

The second stage of the race will take the peloton through a 111-kilometre circuit between Aduna and Amasa that features two climbs of the third category in the first 40 kilometres.
