Movistar's Mikel Landa was a victim of a crash at around six kilometres from the finish line. The rider was saved from the mass crash that affected Tom Dumoulin but ended up hitting the deck at a roundabout.

Landa arrived to the finish line quite angry and after celebrating the victory of his teammate Richard Carapaz, continued arguing about the crash that put him in the 22nd place of the General Classification at one minute and 49 seconds from the overall leader Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma).

"Damn Yates is an idiot and he rides like a madman," spat the Spaniard at J.A. Ezquerro of the Spanish newspaper AS. "He took me down on the roundabout."

The rider had torn bib shorts and abrasions on the hip and the left arm. "I don't think it's anything serious, the problem is the time I lost again," Landa continued. "Now I'm at almost two minutes from Roglic.

"It sucks when things that don't depend on you happen. In the time trial I had trouble, but today I ended up on the ground because of someone else. This is not the start that I wanted. As a matter of fact, my feelings are pretty bad with all these disadvantages."

*Update: The Spaniard, later on, apologised for his words through Twitter. "I'd like to apologise to all the fans and particularly to Simon Yates because of the words that were taken out of context."

The rider of Mitchelton-Scott answered the tweet: "No worries, I understand what it's like to say something in the heat of the moment."
