UAE-Team Emirates' Fernando Gaviria has crossed the finish line of the third stage in the Giro d'Italia in the second place, but Elia Viviani's sprint disqualification gave him the day's victory.

The Colombian sprinter was second on the day's bunch final but the Italian national champion did an irregular sprint and was relegated in the result. This decision of the jury gave the win to Gaviria - the fifth of his career - but the rider is not pleased by the way this turned out.

"This isn't really how I wanted to win and that's why I didn't celebrate on the podium," said the Colombian after the podium ceremony. "In my view, Viviani is the winner today. I don't think he did it on purpose - he came straight out from Ackermann's slipstream.

"This is the first time I've 'won' because of the relegation rule but I guess these things happen, especially in sprinting. Regardless of the result, my team did a great job and I hope to repay them with a clear win as soon as possible."
