Peter Sagan (Bora-hansgrohe) has taken the victory of the first stage of the Amgen Tour of California, which is his second win of the season.

After a Classics season in which the Slovak national champion didn't get the results he was expecting, he could climb back to victory in the American race. The first stage of the race had a start and finish in Sacramento and took the riders through a 143-kilometre route in a warm afternoon.

A group of four riders formed the breakaway of the day but the stage was bound to finish in a bunch sprint. With 13 kilometres to go, the last man of the escape group was caught by a peloton in which Bora-hansgrohe took a leading position to close the gap.

Sagan took a good place ahead of the final stretch, launch a sprint that was impossible to equal for the rivals, and took like this his seventeenth victory of the race. The former World Champion crossed the finish line ahead of Travis McCabe (United States) and Max Walscheid (Sunweb).

"There is no doubt this is a very nice win, not just for me but for the entire team," Sagan commented at the finish line. "Earlier today, Pascal Ackermann dominated the sprint at the Giro and now we doubled up with another strong effort here in California. I'd like to thank everybody for their dedication, the team did a great job.

"They controlled the race and brought me to a perfect position for the sprint. I was focused, stayed in the front in the final stretch and timed my attack well. It's a nice feeling to start with a win in one of my favourite races."
