Jumbo-Visma's Primoz Roglic has won the opening time trial of the Giro d'Italia. The Slovenian took the Pink Jersey on the first day of competition in Bologna, while Simon Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) finished in the second position.

The first rider to go down the ramp of the opening stage of the Giro d'Italia was Tom Dumoulin and he tackled the entire course on his time trial bike, finishing it in 13 minutes and 22 seconds. The next rider to sit on the hot seat was Astana's Miguel Angel Lopez, who completed the route in the same time as the Dutchman of Sunweb.

The next of the favourites to finish the course and set the fastest time was Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain-Merida), who stopped the clock at 13 minutes and 17 seconds. After him, the next rider to set the best time was Jumbo-Visma's Primoz Roglic, who completed the course in 12 minutes and 54 seconds.

Mitchelton-Scott's Simon Yates was the penultimate rider to go down the ramp and although some rain was expected, the course remained dry for him. The Briton completed the course in 13 minutes and 13 seconds, being only 19 seconds slower than Roglic and taking the second GC position.

Other favourites that set times that leave them in top-ten GC places include Rafal Majka (Bora-hansgrohe), Tao Geoghegan Hart (Ineos) and Trek-Segafredo's Bauke Mollema.

The second stage of the Italian grand tour will take the riders through a 205-kilometre flat route with a start in Bologna and finish in Fucecchio, and is set to be the first chance to shine for the fast men.
