The Spanish and French Basque Countries are having discussions to present a joint candidature to host the Grand Depart of the Tour de France in 2022 or 2023.

The President of the Spanish region, Iñigo Urkullu, has announced that along with the French region are studying the possibilities to host the opening day of the Grand Tour in a "shared stage".

Urkullu made the announcement after having a meeting with the President of the French Basque Country Jean-Rene Etchegaray. "We are very interested, but it is still uncertain if it will be in 2022 or 2023," reports local broadcaster Euskal Irrati Telebista.

But the Grand Depart is not the only option the regions are considering. They could also apply for a stage start or arrival, but discussions will first be held with the organisation of the Grande Boucle to talk about the possibilities.
