Boels-Dolman's Chantal Blaak has taken the win of the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad. The Dutch champion crossed the finish line on her own after a successful attack on the Muur van Geraardsbergen.

The Belgian race was the opening competition of the Classics and took the riders through a 122.9-kilometre route. The start was eventful as the women caught the men's race and were instructed to stop.

At the moment of the neutralisation, Bigla's Nicole Hanselmann was a lone escapee while a small group of chasers formed by Ale Cipollini's Diana Peñuela, BePink's Chiara Perini and Isorex Noaqua Crystal Lane-Wright was at 39 seconds from her. The riders had to make a long stop allowing the men's competition to take enough distance.

The peloton came together again soon after the restart and some kilometres later there was a crash in the front part that included Boels-Dolman's Christine Majerus, Movistar's Sheyla Gutierrez and Gloria Rodriguez.

A new attack happened soon after that and Canyon-SRAM's Kasia Niewiadoma, Hannah Barnes and Alexis Ryan managed to break free and were soon joined by Mitchelton-Scott's Annemiek van Vleuten. This attack was neutralised kilometres later and a series of new attacks happened after that.

Van Vleuten, Boels-Dolman's Chantal Blaak, Sunweb's Lucinda Brand and Canyon-SRAM's Kasia Niewiadoma were among the riders that unsuccessfully tried to get away from the rest. Blaak attacked on the Muur van Geraardsbergen and created a considerable gap with the rest.

The Dutch national champion tackled the Bosberg by herself and behind a group of chasers that included Van Vleuten, CCC-Liv's Ashleigh Moolman Pasio and Boels-Dolman's Anna van der Breggen went on to try to catch her. Blaak crossed the finish line by herself and the chasers were caught by a large group just after the two-kilometre mark.

The fastest woman in the pack was European champion Marta Bastianelli (Virtu Cycling).
