Deceuninck-Quick-Step's Max Richeze suffered a training accident in the province of Buenos Aires, in Argentina. The rider was hit by a car while he was preparing for the upcoming Vuelta a San Juan.

Richeze stayed in his home country during the winter break to prepare for his first appointment of the season, the Vuelta a San Juan. He was in a training ride when a car hit him and injured his knee.

"I was riding at the side of the road, very close to the hard shoulder of the way and I don't know why I felt the urge to turn my head to look, because of the traffic," Richeze said to Ciclismo Internacional. "Then I saw that a car was driving on the shoulder and that was coming straight at me.

"The woman that was at the wheel of the car told me that she had a sudden fall in the blood pressure and she took the shoulder to brake, but she never did it."

Richeze said that the woman stopped 50 metres ahead after hitting him, after she caused him several hits, including a hard one to the knee. "I don't know how bad it is," the Argentinian commented.

"Tomorrow I will get an MRI because I have my knee very swollen."

Despite that, the rider feels very lucky for turning and seeing the car before it would have hit him completely. "If I don't see the car and it would have hit me without a warning, things could have been a lot worse."
