The 45th edition of the Volta ao Algarve will have the participation of 24 teams, 12 of which are part of the WorldTour. The stage race will be held from the 20th to the 24th of February.

The Portuguese 2.HC race has become one of the favourites for riders to be part of the first part of their season. Riders like Michal Kwiatkowski (Team Sky), Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) and Tour de France winner Geraint Thomas (Team Sky) have been some of the latest victors of the race.

The start of the Volta ao Algarve will be in Portimao, the 2019 European City of Sport, and will be a stage suitable for the sprinters. The second stage finishes at the highest point of the Algarve, the Fola, and it will have the final line on a first category climb.

The third stage will be an individual time trial in which riders like the Swiss champion of the speciality Stefan Küng can test their TT bikes at the start of the season. The sprinters will have another chance at the fourth stage and the last day will finish on a second category climb in Malhao.

Fabio Aru (UAE Team Emirates), Arnaud Demare and Stefan Küng (Groupama-FDJ) have confirmed their participation in the race.

WorldTour teams that will start at the Volta ao Algarve:

Bora-hansgrohe, CCC Team, Deceuninck-Quick Step, Groupama-FDJ, Lotto Soudal, Team Dimension Data, Team Jumbo-Visma, Team Katusha Alpecin, Team Sky, Team Sunweb, Trek-Segafredo and UAE Team Emirates.

Professional Continental teams:

Caja Rural-Seguros RGA, Cofidis, W52-FC Porto and Wanty-Groupe Gobert.

Continental teams:

Aviludo-Louletano, Efapel, LA Alumínios-LA Sport, Miranda-Mortágua, Rádio Popular-Boavista, Sporting-Tavira, UD Oliveirense-InOutBuild and Vito-Feirense-PNB.
