The winner of the 2007 Vuelta a España and the 2009 Giro d'Italia Denis Menchov is set to return to cycling in 2019 as a Sports Director of Gazprom-RusVelo.

Menchov announced his retirement from as a professional rider in 2013 after suffering a knee injury just before the Giro d'Italia. Five years later, the Russian announces his come-back in the staff of ProContinental team Gazprom-RusVelo.

"In the recent years we have often talked with Renat (Khamidulin, team's general manager) about the possibility of joining the team," the former rider commented. "I should admit, it took me a while to make this decision, but of course I am very glad to become a part of the only Russian professional team.

"I hope my experience will be useful and I will be able to share it with the young riders."

Menchov will join a team of sports director for 2019 that also includes Alexey Markov, Michele Devoti, Evgeny Petrov, Paolo Rosola, Alexander Serov and Andrey Solomennikov.
