Sam Bennet has won the International Performance of the Year at the Cycling Ireland Annual Awards. The rider of Bora-hansgrohe received the award for his outstanding performances throughout 2018.

The 28-year old first took one of the six Special Achievement awards and then he received the last prize of the night: the International Performance of the Year. The rider was in May the first Irish to win a stage in the Giro d'Italia in 31 years and with his two more victories, he beat Stephen Roche's Irish record of two stages at in the same Italian Grand Tour.

"Winning these awards tonight is an acknowledgement of the results I have been trying to achieve for 10 years," commented Bennett. "I moved away from home when I was 18 years old, and there have been times since then when I didn't think I could do it.

"To see the support I have had through that from Irish cycling and from everyone in the room is amazing, and for that, I'm very grateful."

The Irishman has the intention of returning to the Italian race in 2019 to improve from this year's performance. "I’m fighting for my Giro spot for next year," the rider explained to Irish broadcaster RTE.

"There’s pressure with other riders in the team, but I feel I deserve my spot. I’ve been consistent in the race now for two seasons. If that is my plan, I think I can start at Milano-Sanremo."
