Team Sky's David Lopez is set to retire at the end of 2018. The Spaniard finishes his professional career after 14 years in the professional peloton.

The rider finishes his contract with Team Sky at the end of 2018 and he couldn't find other options to continue his career. "I'm calm, I have already settled with the fact that I will no longer be in the peloton and that from January I will have to focus on other things," the rider commented to Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo.

"After knowing the decision of Sky, I looked for other options but I couldn't find any. It is a very difficult moment. The age has an influence, I'm 37 and the teams are reducing the number of riders because they have less publicity income and because in races fewer riders are now needed. Sky took the decision of betting on younger riders and I was left out."

Lopez was part of Euskaltel-Euskadi, Caisse d'Epargne, Movistar and Sky from 2013, having the chance of working with some top riders. "The list of teammates with whom I've shared is brilliant and at the end, I keep more the moments with them than the teams," he explained. Because after all, what remains are the friendships that you create throughout the years.

"I have not been a very known rider but I've always seen that I've been liked by the public, particularly in those stages where you are left behind. I've always been happy by the way I get treated by the fans. And I also feel that I leave with a good image."

Now it is time for the Spaniard to think of the future. "I'd like to continue linked to cycling," Lopez confessed. "I wouldn't necessarily like to be a Sports Director and right now you have many options. I think I have a lot of experience that I can continue developing in other fields.

"For now, I will rest a moment and get used to the idea that I won't continue riding. It's been 16 years, but you don't notice while you are living them. Now I can look back and realise everything that I've done."
