Peter Sagan (Bora-hansgrohe) and Mark Cavendish (Dimension Data) are set to start their 2019 seasons in the Vuelta a San Juan. The former World Champions will be competing in Argentina from the 27th of January to the third of February.

The Sports Secretary of San Juan, Jorge Chica, confirmed the news to the local newspaper Diario de Cuyo. "We are happy to confirm it," he commented. "The negotiations were made some months ago and we can finally confirm that Sagan will be here, giving the race even more prestige."

Sagan chose the Australian Tour Down Under to start his last two seasons and will return to Argentina, after participating at the Tour de San Luis in 2013, 2014 and 2016. Chica also confirmed the attendance of Mark Cavendish. "They are figures that will take the race to an extraordinary level," he explained.

The Sports Secretary also commented that six WorldTour teams will start on the race. In addition to Bora-hansgrohe and Dimension Data, Deceuninck-Quick-Step will also start with names like Max Richeze and Remco Evenepoel, and UAE Team Emirates, which could point out at Fernando Gaviria appearing at the race again and for the first time sporting his new colours.

This announcement contradicts the information provided by the Tour Down Under, which last August announced Sagan as the first confirmed rider for the 2019 edition of the race.
